Table Topics Session:

TM Samuel Fo, the Vice President of Education of the club started the session by explaining a little about the table topics session. As usual, he came up with his own distinguished style of doing things. Instead of the usual(and rather boring way) of simply catching a victim from the audience, he wrote down the names of all those present and chose speakers by drawing lots. The first lucky person is none other than TM Emily who was asked to talk about Mother Theresa. She made a brave attempt at this and made it through. Next, was TM Isaac who got the pleasure of talking about the famous phrase; everyone thinks about changing the world but no one thinks about changing themselves. Then, it was our seasoned speaker, ACB Dorcus Aung who got the chance of giving a touching speech about Mother Theresa. TM Monica was the fourth speaker, who regaled the audience with a speech about the purpose of attending toastmasters. Last but not least, up came Geetha, a student of Stamford College, who graciously appealed to the audience with her smooth flow of impromptu speech. It seems like they all had prepared for their respective topics..hmm.. Great job!!

Table Topics Evaluation:

Again it was an honour for SCTMC to have CC CL Grace Chong who made her point that every speaker who took part were outstanding in their speech delivery. In addition, she managed to squeeze some time in her evaluation to give some quality advice to the table topic speakers.

Humour Session:

Who is it this time? Who else if its not our beloved humour-prince, TM Samuel Foo who managed to elect a leader for the mental hospital from the audience using a very unusual and highly advanced interview tecnique.(anyone wishing to learn it are more than welcome to contact him at 017-3385825)

Table Topics Session:

TM Faye from Hilton Toastmasters club started the session by explaining a little about the table topics session. She also made it clear that all her topics for the day have a common theme-dreams. The first volunteer, TM Amy was asked to share her idea about her dream car. This brave speaker was indeed more than a match for this topic. This is evident by the way she tackled the whole topic(got to admit that she made us dream of owning a BMW sports car ourself). Next, was TM Britney who got the pleasure of talking about her dream house. Then, it was a brave man from Putrajaya, TM Zariq who took upon the challenge of impromptu speaking. He gave an outstanding speech about his dream career(which includes replacing car steering with joysticks). TM Matthew was the fourth speaker, graciously appealing to the audience with his smooth flow of impromptu speech. Seems like they all had prepared for their respective topics..hmm.. Great job! Last but not least, TM K was asked the killer question- “who is your dream date?” (he took the easy way out by declaring that he is not interested in anyone..smart one though..)

Table Topics Evaluator, again it was an honour for SCTMC to have ACB Joshua George who made his point that every speaker who took part were outstanding in their speech delivery. In addition, he managed to squeeze some time in his evaluation to tell give some quality advice to the table topic speakers.

Humour Session:

Who is it this time? Who else if its not our beloved humour-queen, TM Foo Li Wa. She made the audience roar with laughter with her witty and funny comparison of UK and Malaysian english(that was a good one).

Only the fittest survives. As such, food comes first before anything else. Fried mee with chicken rendang! Yum yum....slurp! hehe..

Table Topics Session:

Table Topics Master, SAMUEL FO WEI HAO took the lead role and started the session with his unique style. The first "volunteer" was none other than Mr Ayman who told us more about Stamford College (...perhaps a topic is a piece of cake for someone whos been at stamford for nearly a year). Of course this brave speaker gave the audience a very informative speech about stamford collge and even shared some of his personal experiences there (a simple yet wise move ). Next up was Mr Stephen. This man spoke about China. Bubbling with enthusiasm, this patriotic speaker gave us more than just information about China. He actually emphasised that China is a great country to live in and even asked us to visit China one day. Third on the list was Mr Kumar ,(self-proclaimed most handsome young indian man of the club) who was asked to share his preference of Chocolate or Cheese with the audience. This speaker boldly threw back the question to the audience (can you believe that he actually asked the audience their opinion about his preference-in an apparent bid to buy more time). He finally admitted that he likes chocolate more than cheese. And he defended it by informing us that chocolate can bring down your stress level. Next, Mr Tiger rose to the occasion and told us more about NIKE. He shared with the audience everything he knows about NIKE shoes.
Ms Ophelia stood up as the next volunteer. She had to choose between SAM and KUMAR! As soon as the question was posed, the look of shock on her face was
Table Topics Evaluator, it was none other than TM Lim Sze Yue (most handsome intelligent young man in the club! LSY:OMG..hahah!!). As usual, he managed to point out the areas of improvements for the speakers and at the same time motivate the speakers to do better in the future(spare the criticisms and spoil the speaker...hehe)

Humour Session:

Our vibrant Humour Master, Ms Foo Li Hwa made everyone roar with laughter with her excellent jokes. It takes great effort to make sure that no one gets offended when telling a joke. And our club “humour lady” succeeded!

Finding the True Value of Toastmasters

Hello! Don't worry..the SCTMC report on 14 July is on its way!

In the meantime, I have an article with me here that I'll like to share with you. This article can be found in the Toastmasters magazine July 2009 issue.

It provides one of the best PROOFS of the TRUE VALUE OF TOASTMASTERS.

Yes, go on and read if you're still skeptical about joining a Toastmasters community.

WHERE'S THE PROOF?

When joining Toastmasters, we were told we would learn communication and leadership skills that would enrich our lives. Now we tell new members the same thing. But what proof do we have? What can we hold up as evidence that Toastmasters is actully of true value? (LSY: the questions are very relevant AND true! Where's the proof, you may ask? hmm.. =)

Recently, I hit a home run in my career, and Toastmasters played a huge role in that success. (LSY: How??) My experience with Table Topics, speech manual,contests and other Toastmasters activities all helped me qualify for a new job.

But before I fill you in, let me tell you a bit about my journey with Toastmasters. Eight years ago a co-worker invited me to join her at a Toastmasters meeting. My response? No! (Haha..which reminds me, how many of you out there had the same response, huh? XD) She invited me again. No! And again.. (Determination...) until I realized she recognized the fear in me and would not let me succumb to it. So, reluctantly, I went to a meeting of our local club, Tuesdays with Toastmasters in Austin, Minnesota. The members were so welcoming, I DECIDED TO JOIN. (Point to take note of, club officers!! XD)

For my first six speeches, I struggled mightily. I could not eat the day before a speech. (Gosh, so serious ah??) I could not stay within time limits. (LOL..same problem here) I was red-faced, sweating and trembling. (Totally understand...haha) Yup, I was A PERFECT MESS.

Then the seventh speech came. I trembled less. I was not red-faced. My evaluator was elated at my progress. (Progress..a word so common and powerful, yet we often overlooked it, don't you agree? Excuses on why I cannot do this triumphs over..sorry my friend, the truth is..excuses lead you to nowhere..plase, don't even think of success when you can't even think of progressing yourself..) Maybe there was something to be said for this Toastmasters thing. (Hmmm...)

Soon after, I entered a speech contest and stood in front of my largest audience yet, speaking about hunting and putting on layers of duck-hunting and clothing. I had officially lost my mind...and my terror! (Yup! If you're wondering, you will have the opportunity to contest in a speech, table topics or evaluation and perhaps, a taste of glory? XD)

My story is not unique. Like all of you, I had speeches that were successes and others that flopped. (Well, no one is perfect, isn't it?) But LIKE YOU, I KEPT TRYING. And my confidence grew. As did my leadership and communication skills.

Hunting for a New Job
Then, recently, Toastmasters ran smack dab into the rest of my life. I have worked for Hormel Foods Corporation for more than 10 years. One day, I saw a posting on the company job board for a brand-new position: e-Learning Coordinator. One of the requirements was being able to speak in front of large groups.

After reviewing my job application, Human Resources scheduled me for four interviews, (I repeat, FOUR interviews..gosh..) each with a different person. This was like going into a Table Topics contest circuit - club to area division to district. (Hahah...well put!) I would need to answer questions for a variety of audiences. I prepared for the interviews by devising practice questions and then developing answers based on Toastmasters' basic speech plan of creating an opening, body and conclusion: I would set up a situation, tell the interviewers how I dealt with it, and then explain what the outcome was. (Psst, fellow Toastmasters..useful tip here!!)

Practicing my answers, I incorporated lessons I learned both from Table Topics and the Storytelling manual.

When I interviewed with the job supervisor, she was extremely interested in Toastmasters and noted that I had listed it twice on my resume: once under "skills" and once under "organizations." Her astute questions showed me that people in management know about Toastmasters and look to it as valuable training for the skills and experiences they require in employees.

Persuasive Speaking
My final interview was with the person leaving the position I was applying for. (Interesting...) She was clearly unconvinced about Toastmasters. She noted that I would need to speak to much larger groups than 10 to 20 people. (Just for the record, occasionally in SCTMC, we will have audience numbers exceeding 20. How's that? =P) Happily and confidently, (and expectedly from a Toastmaster's point of view...) I told her my story about a speech evaluation contest that took me as far as the district level, where I spoke to more than 200 people. (to make this clear, imagine speaking to a packed room equivalent to 2 halls of the normal sized cinema room..can you picture it?)

I left this interview with the impression that without my experiences in Toastmasters' speech contests, I may have been eliminated from the job. (I'll say...don't even think about applying for it at the first place! Haha..)

Instead, I waited nervously for a call... and then learned I was awarded the position. My Toastmasters experience had paid off!

I recently received my job review. In it, my boss (and perhaps one day, YOUR boss will..) wrote the following: "Ability to present in front of a large audience - Ann's experience in Toastmasters is invaluable. As we develop this new job role, it is very apparent that the ability to speak in front of a large group is an integral part of the position..."

So, now, in my hand, in my life and even in my job review, is the proof that the skills learned in Toastmasters truly do enrich life.

Word of the Evening: CHANGE

It's the moment of transition. A new change to the club. New faces. New blood. New Executive Committee. The highlight of the evening was none other than the Installation of SCTMC's EXCO Team of 2009/2010!!

Before I begin, a word of thanks to the 25 students from Xinjiang, China who attended our meeting for the first time. You have taken the very first step towards building professional speaking & leadership skills. The rest of the journey is in your hands now. Do speak to the EXCO team if you are keen to join in the fun with us!

Yap, it's the final meeting for the term 08/09. The day that the new vibrant team takes helm of SCTMC. Here we go...

SAA was Gina. Tan Boon Chuan takes spot as Timer. Amy Li as Ah Counter. Vithiya once again was responsible of the language usage as the Grammarian. General Evaluator was Barry Ong, the incoming Division C Governer from DHL Cyberjaya TMC.

Stand-in President, Grace Chong warmed the audience and wow, it was the longest introduction session we ever had! The evening was remarkable with an attendance of almost 40 people in the room!! Awesome.. Control was then handed over to the Toastmaster of the Evening, Lim Sze Yue.

This time around, no table topics session. Instead, it was the EXCO team on the spotlight. Area C2 Governer, Michael Chan was invited to uninstall SCTMC Executive Committee of 2008/2009. They (or rather we..hehe..) are now officially released from their duties. Barry Ong then proceeded to install the SCTMC Executive Committee of 2009/2010. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Grace Chong as the President!! Samuel Fo - VPE!! Allan Ma - VPM!! Muthu Kumar - VPPR!! Gina - Secretary!! Carmen Khoo - Treasurer!! and Vithiya as the SAA!!!

Humour session was led by Ms Foo Li Hwa with her quirky jokes once more! Haha..Great job there! We then had a break & fellowship session at around 730pm.

Meeting resumed. And suddenly, the lights went off!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MR JOSHUA!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! Yap, another special event..we sang a birthday song for our outgoing President (FYI, his birthday was on the 25th of June). Sam led the team and presented a "mini cake" ;P and Kumar gave the birthday card to the surprised birthday BOY! XD XD

Time for assignment speeches!

Ong Siew Ming was first with her 2nd speech from the C&L Manual entitled, How to Get A Better Sleep? I asked her why this topic and she has this to say. "It's pretty simple. I want to share the steps to sleep for more than 10 hours AND I'm very good at sleeping." :D Well said.

Lucas Ng has finally got the train moving again! After a very loooonnnnnngggggg break from assignment speeches, there he was with his 2nd speech as well from the C&L manual. He shared with the audience on the topic Controlling Emotions and honestly, he was pretty good at it! Superb delivery from another superb speaker!! =)

And.. Fatoumata Dibba is back again! After missing her presence for some time, the champion speaker is back with her 6th speech entitled In The Changing Environment. Being a successful networker herself, she delivered an impactful speech with one thing in her mind. To share and guide the audience to financial freedom. An amazing speaker...

Gajendran was next. Our regular guest who is the VPE of Help TMC enlightened the audience with his speech, When Green is Good. It was clear and evident that the speaker had carried out heaps of research aligned with the objectives of his speech. Main point.. Green tea is a wonderful drink that brings a lot of goodness to our body, mind and soul. Take note, you all out there. Start including green tea in your diet!

Not enough?? Well, we have speaker number FIVE! Dorcas Aung from Ireka TMC is also back!! Wow.. it's just like a reunion night! Haha.. Yap, Dorcas delivered her 5th speech from the Story Telling Advanced Speech manual. Quoting "Rome was not built in a day, neither was a king made in a day", the title of her story was David the Chosen King. Another great delivery with her animated hand gestures and on the spot intonations. A fantastic speaker to watch and a splendid speech to listen to!!

*Two thumbs up to all speakers!!*

General Evaluator, Mr Barry Ong took over the stage for the General Evaluation session. Assignment speech evaluators were Samuel Fo for Ong Siew Ming, Muthu Kumar for Lucas Ng, YC Yap for Fatoumata Dibba, Michael Chan for Gajendran and Joshua George for Dorcas Aung. The roleplayers then delivered their reports followed by the General Evaluation from Mr Barry.

One more thing, I don't know if anyone of you realised, I was doing a speech as well! As the TME, I was fulfilling the objective of Project 5 - Introduce the Speaker from the Specialty Speeches manual. Thank you, Mr YC Yap for your written evaluation of my perfomance. I really appreciate it. Guys, how did I do?? One more speech to go for my ACB!! Haha..

President, Joshua George then gave his FINAL closing remarks as the President. He welcomed the change of leaders in the club and urged the new Executive Committee to bring the club to greater heights and produce more champion speakers in the coming term. I personally see the quality in many of our current members already and I hope to see Sam, Muthu Kumar, Allan Ma, Siew Ming, Maya, Gina, Bushra, Amy, and Boon Chuan among others, to be a regular in Toastmasters contest and shine along right up to the Division level!!

As for airtime, Mr Barry gave a short speech on leadership skills and it really got the audience motivated to raise the bar and do better in their life. Thanks, Mr Barry!!

Note: We had an extraordinary meeting that evening. We usually end at 9pm the latest, right? That night, we were wayy later than that! Haha..well, that's foreseeable with the special events and 6 SPEAKERS lined up, but the most important thing is all of us brought back with us another worthy learning experience, right? =) Make the best out of it!

No Sparks?

Word of the Evening: SPARKLING (ebullient, effervescent, scintillating, smart, witty, bright, brilliant, gleaming, glowing, radiant, shimmering, shining)

Did you just say no sparks? Absolutely wrong. Read the word of the evening again. Sparkling. A simple word isn't it? (don't know if you noticed, but sparkling is synonymous to ebullient! oops..there we go again!) And what better way to have a sparkling meeting than to have Lucas Ng as the TME! (haha..yes, some of you may know...we had a really good, sparkling time..Lucas can be heard "sparkling away" every time he speaks!!!) XD

The evening's SAA was Ong Siew Ming, calling the meeting to order at 6.45 pm. Bushra takes seat as Timer, Allan Ma handling the Ah Counter, Samuel Fo responsible for Table Topics, Muthu Kumar as Table Topics Evaluator, Vithiya taking Grammarian notes, and Grace Chong as the General Evaluator.

Fast forward.. Table Topics! Sam lived up to expectation and had another interesting twist to the session. Instead of drawing out papers, volunteers were to draw out items from a box! Hmm.. First to rise to the challenge was Wang De Xin who spoke on Online Games. Then it was Stephen Fernando whose lucky hands picked a packet of campbell soup. Of course, he has to talk about Campbell Soup! And it gets better from here... Amy Li then found herself a packet of Colgate plax staring at her.. Haha..yap, she had two minutes to share her story ... "Colgate plax is one item that you ought to have..it freshens your breath...etc etc" XD. The fourth participant, a first-timer Tan Boon Chuan from the Law School picked an item in green. A popular and one of the essential nutritious drink, 3-in-1 Milo!! We found out that the guy here doesn't really like Milo though.. :D Great job, Boon Chuan! Lastly, we had another first-timer, Gan Siaw Ching from the Secretarial Studies braving herself to the front, confidently until ... she saw the item in her hand. Her jaws dropped. Daia washing powder!! Ouch..even for me, this is gonna be tough but she did well, at moments flipping the tiny packet up and down seeking for more to speak on! Smart!!

Looking eager on the other end from my table was Muthu Kumar waiting impatiently for Lucas to finish his "sparkling" introduction of the Table Topics Evaluator. Then he rose and stepped up to the lectern. With a fierce look, he suddenly ... smiled, a big one.. =D and began sharing his opinion on the participants' performance earlier. Well done! A quality evaluation from the incoming VPPR of SCTMC.

Humour time! Open to the floor, Sam was "cheered" his way to the floor with a simple joke. Sze Yue (hehe..that's me..XD) then went out and shared another one. Stephen Fernando decided not to miss out on the fun and hurriedly churned out his famous KFC joke. Haha...heard that for like the tenth time already.. but the point is..ITS STILL FUNNY WHEN HE SAYS IT!! Gosh.. :P

And off we went for a short break...to savour 'the curry that was spilled' Hee... Delicious AND Sparkling!!

We continued to sparkle the night with an assignment speech by LIM SZE YUE with his 4th project from the Specialty Speeches manual. Objective - Read Out Loud. He delivered his speech extracted from a book entitled Drinking Coffee, Telling Stories and Making Money by Sim Quan Seng and Stephanie Sta Maria.

GRACE CHONG then took the stage with a short talk on The Education Program, briefing the audience on the basics of Toastmasters journey. It was timely as we had a few newcomers who I'm sure benefited and understood better on the achievements that they can look forward to. Grace conducted the session in a two-way communication style, throwing questions to the audience and receiving answers. This is when we had so much fun...almost everyone trying their best to "sparkle" in every sentence we used. First, it was Grace, then of course.. (kiasu XDXD) Lucas, then Sze Yue, Allan, Sam, Kumar, Vithiya... DANGER, Laughters everywhere!! Hahahha.. SAMUEL FO was then invited to give a demo Icebreaker speech and did a brilliant 4-minute speech, full of wit, vocal variety and appropriate body gestures. Whenever he stands in front of the audience, he seems to have the sparkle in his eyes. Cool, huh? :D

General Evaluator, Ms GRACE CHONG continued the ebullient mood with the General Evaluation session. ACB Joshua George was called upon to deliver his evaluation on Sze Yue's speech. To sum his evaluation, it wasn't one of the speaker's best performance. :( All roleplayers then delivered their report for the night, followed by the general evaluation of the meeting by Grace Chong. And oh by the way, Lucas' eyes were sparkling when Vithiya delivered her report. She lost count of the number of "sparkling" the energetic TME used. Sooo expected.

President wraps up the meeting, with a quick airtime slot by Sze Yue, as usual, reminding the audience of the meeting's report and the blog. "Those who are still not on my mailing list, please stay back for a moment. I need your sparkling email address" :D

Battle of the Sexes

District 51 recently held one of its biggest event at Wisma WIM on 27 May 2009 and it was an absolute BLAST!

The Organizing Chairman, Mr Dominic Gerard Joseph had organized the Great Debate or better known as the Battle of the Sexes. The title of the debate:

In the 21st Century, Men Are Less Reliable Than Women As Leaders!

For the motion (The Women Team)

Alright. So, which one of us were there? There were in total 6 of us from SCTMC. Bushra, Maya, Muthu Kumar, Lucas, Amy Choo and myself made a trip there to see for ourselves how great the debate actually is. At 6.30 p.m. we treated ourselves to the special nasi beryani served there. The organising chairman then delivered his opening address at 7.30 p.m. and the nights' highlighted debate began at 8 p.m. sharp.

The ladies were up first, with Kay Wong standing her ground on women as the more reliable gender when it comes to leadership. Then, Jon Tan from the men's team took the stage. And the roles switched to Chew Sher Ling, G.Jeyam, Meera Raman, G.Subramaniam, Kiang Fanng Pyng and last but not least, Lee Swee Seng. Now, all 6 of us came to this event without any idea of the speaker's capability. I personally have only seen Lee Swee Seng delivered a speech in TLI but the rest of the names were unfamiliar to me and I am sure, unfamiliar to most of SCTMC members. However, all 8 speakers were accomplished and competent speakers and their performance supported that. It is truly an eye-opening event. The speakers seem to blend in humour with so much ease and truly winning the heart of the audience of around 100.

Bullets were being fired. Salts were being rubbed on open wounds. Snipers attack. Chemical warfare between the teams.. Men are less reliable!! No, women are less reliable!! Look at the global credit crisis we're in. The leaders of the companies were men! The Great Depression..World War... And the men's team rebutted, confine your arguments to only year 2000 - 2009. No empirical evidence were shown! Men are equally reliable if not better than women... We also heard the issue of IQ and EQ being brought out...the qualities of leadership were explained by both teams to their favour. Statistics were flinging in the air..

Phew..you thought it was tense? Not at all. It was indeed a Battle of Wit. Not a single speaker failed to crack the audience into laughter. And seriously, it was super super funny. Well planned speech and delivered to perfection. "Men are like advertisements. Their promises are never true!" XD XD "How does a man not doing the house laundry got to do with leadership?" "You married the wrong man lah!" LOL!!!

Yap. It really was a splendid exposure towards a higher level of communication skills. Watching them perform, I realised that I am still far far away from being on par with these fellows..but I will be there, we will be there...one fine day! Hee~

Oh, i forgot. Guess who won the debate?? Haha..I suddenly feel like being naughty and not release the results to you all yet. I'll post the answer...say, next week? Whoa! What a week it has been!! I've got loads of updates for you guys.. But first..

Word of the Evening: WINSOME (sweetly or innocently charming, engaging, lovely, fascinating)

The nights event kickstarted with a sumptious dinner that had everyone displaying their winsome smile while tucking in. The SAA, Mr Michael Chan (Hilton TMC) calls the meeting to order at 6.45 p.m. Then, the charming President, Lim Sze Yue ;P, standing in on behalf of Mr Joshua George welcomes all present and delivers his presidential report. Ms Gina was at the helm of the meeting, assuming the role of Toastmaster of the Evening. She led all present to a brief introduction of the Toastmasters International club and also introduced her team for the night. Muthu Kumar as Timer, Allan Ma as Ah Counter, Deborah Hoe as Table Topics Master, Amy Choo as Table Topics Evaluator, Lucas Ng as Grammarian, and the General Evaluator is none other than Mr Joshua George.

Table topics time! In my whole journey with Toastmasters, I have never seen such an interesting table topics session. Seriously!! Think I'm bragging? Well, read on and find out for yourselves. Ms Deborah Hoe led the session with a winsome twist. We usually have to volunteer ourselves to take up the challenge of impromptu speaking right? Today, we don't have to. We usually sit at our own places as the session was conducted right? Today, we all sat in a circle. We Never had a music playing along the session right? Today, we had YMCA song blasting from the laptop! "I said young man,....." And a gift at the very end? Wow.

So, what exactly happened was..something like a musical chair. A parcel was passed along the circle as the music is being played. When the music stops, the person who is holding the parcel automatically "volunteers" to be the speaker. The topic will be unwrapped from the yellow parcel. Lucky number one was Bushra who looked "stunned" when the music came to a halt. However, the student from Yamen did an excellent job in speaking on My Dream Career. The music continues.. And it hits Muthu Kumar next! What Do You Enjoy Doing?? Mark his word, you all. He says he enjoys not listening to his friend's advice and loves going against the odds. It got me thinking, a winsome attitude or a foolish choice? Hmm.. Lady luck then decided to smile upon Gajendran, a handsome gentleman from Help University TMC. He took on his given speech title, Where Do You See Yourself in 2 Years Time? in the most steady manner I've ever seen. In 2 years, the man hopes to be a graduate lawyer, coming back and taking a plunge in the local politics scene, aspiring to sort out the mess we have here. Music plays..music stops. And Michael Chan speaks. He told us that he wants to be financially free and be able to retire in Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years? Yes, you can do it, Mr Michael!! The play button was hit and the parcel moved around once more. As fate would have it, the most talkative person in the club got the honour to speak. And that is our club's president, Mr Joshua George!! XD "In 10 years time, I would love to see my wife and I running a self-sustaining orphanage. It has been our dream to help the kids..." 5 speakers and you thought the session would wrap up? Nope. The music continues..and in fact, the session was so enjoyable that nobody objected to a 6th speaker.. Until it came to my hands..then Lucas'. Stop. Ms Deborah came to him and said all good things must come to an end, and as she unwraps the parcel..this book is for you, Lucas! *Ish..wasted lah, I silently whispered* :D Excellent, excellent session. We definitely experienced a whole new meaning towards table topics. Great job there, Ms Deborah and thank you very much!! XD XD

Aiks, much has been said of the table topics. So, I'm gonna keep it short on the evaluation. Amy Choo took the stage with her ever adorable evaluation of the 5 speakers. Then, humour was..erm awkwardly humourous! With Sam Fo and Muthu Kumar making their presence felt. And off we go to a short break...

Assignment speeches time! We had TM VITHIYA, a young, energetic, young, smart, young lady who amazed us with her Ice Breaker speech entitled, Me, Myself and I. For the record, this girl is fondly known as Maya among her friends. So, what did we found out about Maya? She is a Stamford student pursuing a Diploma in Mass Communication (correct me if I am wrong..) and can you belief this.. She is in the midst of penning down her life in a book, soon to be published! And she's only 18!

GAJENDRAN was next with his 9th project from the C&L Manual. Objective - Persuade With Power. The man brought the audience to the world of smokers with his speech entitled, Recipe For Disaster. Mix nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide concentration, put it in your mouth and there you go! A simple recipe for your disaster! That was the opening to his speech..very catchy isn't it? He went on to persuade the audience to stay away from smoking and for us to encourage our loved ones to stop smoking, if any.

LIM SZE YUE then took centrestage with his 3rd project from the Specialty Speeches Manual. Objective - Sell A Product. He had the audience listening to his sales talk on a seminar workshop known as 50 of Your Communication Problems Answered! The "product" was tailored for fellow toatmasters or anyone who would like to improve their communication skills.

General Evaluator, Mr JOSHUA GEORGE was then invited to the floor to lead the session. Assignment speech evaluators were Samuel Fo for Maya, Amy Choo for Gajendran, and Deborah Hoe for Sze Yue. All three gave encouraging feedbacks to the speakers as well as points to strengthen on. The roleplayers then delivered their reports followed by the general evaluation by Mr Joshua, ACB.

President, Sze Yue, took over and gave his closing remarks. Among others, he persuaded the members to attend a District 51 event, The Great Debate to be held the following day and received tremendous support from them. All 5 tickets we had were sold! We were even short of one... Hee~

Quote of the Evening: COMING HERE TODAY IS TRULY AN EYE-OPENING EVENT!

I HESITATED AND REGRETTED

As I was walking home the other day, I saw an old woman sitting on the pavement. Her clothes were worn and stained, and her face was smudged with dirt. Her white hair was matted and plastered to her scalp, it must have not been washed for a long, long time. She was sitting on a pile of flattened cardboard boxes. She had a kind face, but it looked worn and tired.

As people walked by, she would held out a frail, shaking hand and pleaded, "Money for food, please?" Most just passed her by; some gave her disgusted looks. Some put small change into her hand - at that, she smiled, bowed her head, and softly said, "Thank you".

I reached into my pockes and felt for coins but all I found was a five ringgit note. A thought came to me: Why not make the old lady's day by giving her a fiver? But it was a fleeting thought - soon gone. I kept searching for loose change until I finally found 20 sen - but by then, I had walked some distance past the old woman. I looked back, and she was looking at me with bright hope in her eyes. She had seen me searching for my pockets and was obviously hoping that I would give her something. But it was only 20 sen! I felt bad, and, reluctantly, I turned and walked on. I could imagine her downcast and dissapointed face as she looked at my retreating back. Not many people had given her anything; every sen must have meant a lot for her.

I couldn't forget the old lady that day. I could have just given her the five ringgit that I had. I almost did, why did I stop? I could have just turned around and walked a few paces back to put some money in her hands, why didn't I? I had the money, and it is not like I couldn't spare it. It might have made the old lady's day. It could have bought her a meal that would have warmed her at least once during long cold days on the streets. She looked so frail and weak...

I decided to find her again the next day and give her some money. Enough for a warm drink and meal, perhaps even a change of clothes. I walked that way again - but she was not at her usual spot. The next day, I walked the same way again, but again she wasn't there. This went on for a week, and at last I gave up and thought that perhaps she might have moved elsewhere. Perhaps the people around here had not been as charitable as she had hoped. I certainly hadn't been.

I have not seen the old woman again; I am not sure where she is now or how she is doing. What I do know is that I had missed a chance to do a good deed. I should have done what I'd felt was right to do at that moment.

Fellow readers, this article entitled One Moment is published in Starmag, Sunday 17 May 2009 HEART & SOUL and is written by C.H. Cheah. The reasons I decided to put this up on the blog are:

From a Toastmasters point of view, this is an example of how you can craft your speech as if you are bringing the audience into the scene. The article is written with a strong hint of vivid words, so descriptive that the readers can visualise what they read. Let's assume it is a delivered speech, I personally feel that it is a speech with a strong message (Project 2 C&L), a specific purpose (Project 3 C&L), powerful word choice and arrangement especially with vivid words (Project 4 C&L), provides ample room for body gestures (Project 5 C&L), vocal variety (Project 6 C&L) and with further variations, could add up to persuade with power and inspire the audience as well! (Project 9 & 10 C&L). Further dissect the article and I'm sure you will discover interesting words and sentences that you could make use and brighten the Grammarian's day!

There you go! Honestly, the next reason prompted me to share this article with you. I read it this morning and felt that anyone could relate to it. I guess we all had the experience of hesitating and regretting it later on. I had met a few people like the old woman in the story, occasionally, when I left my office, whilst walking to the nearby bus stop. And I certainly hadn't been as charitable as I hoped I had been now.

An Evening Full of Merit

Word of the Evening: MERIT (excellence, value, virtue)

So, what's the merit all about this evening? Well, first of all the Ebullient TME is back for his second round.. that's right! TM Lucas Ng took control of the evening once again as the TME and boy, did he struggle to use the word "Merit"..hehe, not so easy as "Ebullient" eh? :P

Dinner was ready by 6.15 p.m and 'ting-ting-ting', the lovely Timer, Carmen, rang the bell to usher everyone in to kickstart the night's event. "Kindly switch off or put your mobile phones on silent mode. Speakers are reminded not to infringe on...," Ms Ong Siew Ming as the SAA started off. Lim Sze Yue standing-in as President took the stage as The Man (Mr Joshua George) had an urgent matter to attend to just before the meeting. Lucas then warmed the audience after introducing his team of roleplayers with his 'oh-so-desperate' attempt trying to use the word 'merit' (LOL) before handing over to Amy Choo who was the Table Topics Master.

The evening of excellence continued with Ms Amy Choo's array of interesting topics. In short, I'll say IT'S CARTOON TIME! ^^ Mr Joshua George stood up strong and confident until the moment his topic was announced.. You Are Superman. Tell Us How You Would Celebrate Mother's Day With Your Mom. XD Not a problem at all for this seasoned speaker..he said he would lift his mum and fly her all over the world, from the ruins of the Pyramids in Egypt to the famed Eiffel Tower in Paris. Mr Raghu, the young man jumped at his 2nd attempt in impromptu speaking and got the topic... Why Do You Want To Be Doraemon? Fantastic flow of ideas and a composed delivery manner from him. Another truly confident speaker we have. See? A Meritful evening, isn't it? Then, we had Lavanya who spoke on Bugs Bunny to Promote Nasi Lemak in Australia! Another unique style of delivery, she disagreed with the idea and explained her reasons with so much wit. You see..you don't really have to agree with the TTM's topics! Excellent! And we then have what I would say, the best topic one can ever get, You are Spiderman. Explain Your Process of Cleaning The Toilet.. -.-" Luckily, we had an equally good speaker (as good as the title....lol) to tackle the topic, and it was none other than...Lucas Ng! Smart boy..haha.. Shirley was next. Her first time to the meeting and her first time taking centrestage. The brave young lady showed no signs of backing out and went on to explain Why Batman is Superior Than All The Other Heroes! I can tell you this..Spiderman was being bombarded many, many times during her 2-minute speech. Very intelligent.. =D

What is this?! Superman, Doraemon, Bugs Bunny... A rather childish topics! If you are in this position, let me assure you that the topics given were one of the most challenging and out of the norm. The speakers who took the topics were indeed presented with an opportunity to speak off the cuff AND speak with boundless imagination. All 5 of them took the bull by the horns and delivered in a mature manner with so much to learn from them. I stand corrected.

Phew, interesting, interesting, and interesting. These speakers not only know how to speak with confidence, they sure do know how to tickle your bones! Not enough, you say? Well, we had Ms Foo Li Hwa (Yes, she's back!!!) entertained us with her string of jokes. Our dearest Humour Master evidently displayed her merit and gave the audience another heartily "laughing session".How A Married Couple Could End Up in A Fight... my goodness..that was just brilliant! Grace Chong then gave her evaluation on the Table Topics Speakers performance. Great job!

5-minute break!

Ong Siew Ming gave her very first prepared speech. The Icebreaker from the C&L Manual. She spoke on Myself and My Ambition and had the audience understand more of her as an individual with particular interest on her chosen career path. She aspires to be a successful lawyer and with that fine delivery of speech, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before she becomes one. Let us all congratulate her on her first step with her excellent debut speech!! We are all looking forward to your next speech!

LIM SZE YUE was next with his 4th project from the Special Occasion Speeches manual. A speech was given with the objective to present an award. The speech was entitled Best Toastmasters 2008/2009. A well-projected roleplay speech by the speaker who however, tasted a pinch of reality when he read the name of the award recipient wrongly. It showed the lack of preparation and lack of attention when it comes to details. So, keep in note, fellow Toastmasters! (hehe..very malu, you know..;) Nonetheless, I think the audience do recognised the effort shown, especially with that trophy Ms Irene "received", it should make the deal! Hehe..

JOSHUA GEORGE came in third to give his 5th speech from the Special Occasion Speeches manual, whereby a speech was given in recognition of him receiving the Best Lecturer Award from Datin Ong. Hehe.. As usual, the speaker was in full gear charging ahead with his confidently structured speech thanking everyone he had to thank (but not me..) in obliging with his duties and passion to teach. And, Ladies and Gentlemen, at the very end of his speech, SCTMC is proud to announce that we have produced an Advanced Communicator Bronze speaker! Yes, that's right! Mr Joshua George have completed 10 speeches in the Advanced Manual Series and if you could recall, our President here got his Competent Communicator title in the same term! Yap, that means he has been working his butt off to achieve a double milestone in his TM journey this term. Kudos to you! See, meritful evening isn't it?? XD

General Evaluator, SK RATNAM, DTM (EXTOL TMC) took over the next session and invited the assignment speech evaluators, Jess Foong (UNITAR TMC), Irene Lee (Crystal TMC) and Stephen Fernando (PJ Hilton TMC) respectively for their report. The roleplayers then presented their report and they are: Carmen as Timer, Ibe as Ah Counter and Jee Aik (HELP TMC) as the Grammarian. Mr SK Ratnam then presented his general evaluation of the evening's meeting. Thanks to Ms Ng Siew Tho (Crystal TMC) and all other guests who came and supported us.

That's a wrap from me! Meeting ended at around 8.35 p.m and it's then Lotus meeting time, downstairs! hehe..

Word of the Evening: EBULLIENT

Yes, indeed. We had an EBULLIENT evening, thanks to our ebullient Toastmaster of the Evening, Mr Lucas Ng! This TME here had outrageously used the word ebullient in almost every sentence he speaks!! Talk about being zestfully enthusiastic.. :)

As usual, 6.15 p.m. was Fellowship session. Jacky Ang, the SAA called the meeting to order at 6.45 p.m. Mr President of SCTMC then took the stage with his welcoming note. And the Man of the Evening (XD), the ebullient TME, Lucas Ng kickstarted with a brief history of the Toastmasters International. The roleplayers then introduced themselves. We had Ong Siew Ming as the Timer, Lavanya as the Ah Counter, Muthu Kumar as the Table Topics Master, Amy Choo as the Table Topics Evaluator , Deborah Hoe (D Utama Advanced TMC) as the Grammarian, and finally, Rengamnathan (Ernst & Young TMC) as our General Evaluator.

Muthu Kumar had the first volunteer, Mr Joshua George speak on Mr Stephen Fernando's (PJ Hilton TMC) good qualities in a situation where it was the latter's marriage day! Interesting, interesting... Next, was Prince who shared with us on his dream job to be a surgeon because he wanted to save people's life. Ayman, a first-timer to the Toastmasters community made no error with his steady presentation on What is the One and Only Question You Would Ask Barack Obama? I won't tell you what he would've asked. Instead, I want to ask you. If you were given the opportunity, what would you have asked?? Ong Siew Ming came up as the fourth challenger and made us all laugh with her views on If You Have One Power to Change One Thing in the World, What Would it Be... She said, the college library. Full stop. Hahaha!! The One Million Dollar question was picked by Lavanya and she shared with us on how she would use her 1 million dollar in her hands.

Humour was open to the floor. We had Ms Amy Choo, Jee Aik (HELP TMC) and Mr Stephen Fernando giving their latest bits of laughters to everyone. Especially liked this one, Policeman: Miss, why did you beat the traffic light? Didn't you see it was red? Lady: Yes, I saw the red light, but I didn't see you!! XD

Ms Amy Choo then presented her evaluation on the Table Topics Speakers. It was an encouraging session and the speakers and audience enjoyed the session.

5-minute break!

ACB ANANDARAJA (Ernst & Young TMC) was first in the Assignment Speeches session. Break The Rules was the title of his speech from the 3rd project in the C&L manual. Before you guys go away with the wrong message, the speaker wasn't encouraging you to break the rules. Break the rules, to a certain extent only. Hehe.. So, keep in mind ya! XD

GOH AI YAT was next with her multimedia-aided presentation fulfilling the objective of the 6th speech in the C&L manual with her speech entitled Creating The Network. That is the foundation of networking so, ladies and gentlemen, you know what steps to take next time when you are in a social event!! Great speech!

JOSHUA GEORGE continued the wave of speeches with his 2nd project from the Advanced Manual, the Specialty Speeches. He gave a speech honouring the Best Student in the college before presenting the award to Sze Yue. Thanks lots!! Hehe..though it was a roleplay situation :( Note to those present, the qualities and achievements he mentioned was not true. Erm... on second thought, maybe some of them are true! Oops.. :P

LIM SZE YUE to wrap up the group of assigment speakers for the evening, with his 3rd project from the Special Occasion Speeches. This is funny. Right after accepting the award, he roasts the person who presented the award to him!! XD XD The objective was to poke fun of a person in a humourous way and he choses to "blast" the President of SCTMC, Mr Joshua George. That was so fun.. I mean how often do you get to do that?? Hahah!! But again, it was a roleplay situation - a farewell dinner for the President.

General Evaluator RENGAMNATHAN, ACS then took control and invited Jee Aik, Amy Choo, Rengamnathan and Stephen Fernando for the evaluation of the Assignment Speakers. The reports from other roleplayers were then presented followed by Mr Rengamnathan's General Evaluation of the evening's meeting.

Best Table Topics Speaker was Ms Ong Siew Ming. Best Assignment Speaker was Ms Goh Ai Yat and Best Evaluator was Ms Amy Choo. *Thumbs up!!*

Time's up. Meeting ended around 8.30 p.m. Time to head to the Lotus restaurant downstairs!! :D

Hi guys. I noticed that the font on display is rather small. A small tip, which you may already know, is to zoom into the page for a clearer view on the text. I'm not sure if your computer runs the same way but you can try any of these 2 ways.

1 - Press Ctrl + move the button on your mouse forward to zoom in and backwards to zoom out.
2 - Go to View, Text Size and select your preferred range. Recommended..Large.

Word of the Evening: COURAGE

Hello!! Today, I had a different idea and as such, this report will be courageously prepared in a different way. And just before you think I am giving an example for the word of the evening, hehe..I wasn't.

Right..Here we go..

Event began at 6.15 pm with Break & Fellowship, an amendment that you would like to take notice of. Meeting officially started at 6.45 pm with Michael Chan as the SAA performing his duty. Stand-in President, Lim Sze Yue :) took the stage with his welcoming address. Control was then handed over to the Toastmaster of the Evening.... MUTHU KUMAR!!! The young man created a warm atmosphere with the audience with his question... If you could be, what age would you like to be at this moment?? Hehe.. That evening saw NG WEI JIANG as the Timer, ONG SIEW MING as the Ah Counter, LUCAS NG as the Table Topics Master, STEPHEN FERNANDO as the Table Topics Evaluator and last but not least, our VPE.. GRACE CHONG taking note of the Grammar for the night.

LUCAS led the us all through a fantastic Impromptu session. First up was Sze Yue who spoke about What was the happiest moment in your life? Then, came Jacky, Prince, Bushra as well as Siew Ming who were all given topics related to the 'courageous' theme. XD Jacky was given the topic on What is the Most Courageous thing you have ever done? Prince was asked to define what courage means to him (though after a slight hiccup we saw there..ain't that right Lucas?? xD) Bushra was then asked on Who is the Most Courageous person in your life? Her Grandpa was her answer and it was indeed a memorable story of hers. Then Siew Ming, a first-timer and a new member courageously shared her feelings. Excited or Nervous?? Haha.. I can tell you this, she's talented in making people laugh!! Muthu Kumar, Sam Fo and now Siew Ming too?? Gosh... I so gotta brush up my humour now.. Ergh. :D

MR STEPHEN FERNANDO a regular and honoured guest took the Evaluation session and as always..it was an enjoyable 10-minutes altogether. Simple, sweet and smart. A very experienced speaker whom we can always count on to learn from.

Humour Session was open to the floor. Stephen Fernando firstly cracked his joke on "Original or Spicy" before it got Sam Fo to raise his arm with excitement and shared his piece of humour too.

A 5-minute break.. To catch up on makan time! Hehe.. Hungry la... LOL.

JACKY ANG was first for the Prepared Speech session. Proceeding with his 2nd speech from the C&L manual, he delivered his message on Frozen Food. It has been a while since Jacky gave his Icebreaker speech and it was really good to have him back on track again! Keep it goin Jacky!

LIM SZE YUE then delivered his 2nd speech from the Specialty Speeches Manual entitled Speak Up. The objective was to Uplift the Spirit and the speaker chose to deliver his points on the benefits of Toastmasters. Well, I sure hope that it was good enough to get the audience motivated!

General Evaluation took place led by AMY CHOO, the G.E. for the evening. Sam Fo evaluated Jacky while James Gan was in charge of evaluating Sze Yue's speech. Both Evaluators did an awesome job, encouraging the speakers and to also include the room's for improvement as they have noticed. Reports were delivered from the rest of the Role Players and summed up by the G.E's overall evaluation of the meeting ongoings.

Control handed over to Muthu Kumar who then presented the Best Table Topics Speaker award to Prince! His calm and steadiness in taking on his topic proved to win the hearts of the audience. Great job there, and Congratulations to you, Prince! Yap.. Time's almost up.. Sze Yue then gave his closing speech and wrapped up the meeting. Yay!!!

And can you believe it? We ended the meeting by 8.15p.m!! This meeting should seriously go into the SCTMC's Book of Records! Hahahah..

See you guys next two weeks on 28 April 2009. Same time, same place. See you there! ;)

Word of the Evening: DELIGHT

What a delight to have attended a delightful meeting and be delighted by the delightfully humourous speakers of SCTMC!

Food comes first!!

A slight change compared to past meetings - food comes first before anything else. Fried mee with chicken rendang! Yum yum....slurp! hehe..

Table Topics Session:

Table Topics Master, JACKY ANG took the lead role and started the session with his unique style. The first volunteer was none other than Mr Joshua George who was asked what will he do during an economic downturn (...perhaps a topic that many of us might like to exclude from our conversations). But, of course this seasoned speaker is more than a match for this question. He took the smart way out by declaring that he will do what others do during an economic downturn. One point that he strongly stressed was cutting down expenditures during trying times (an advice that seems so simple yet almost always impossible to achieve..haha). Next up was Mr James Gan. This man from Digi Toastmasters Club spoke about Satisfaction and what it means to him. He made his point clear by emphasizing that money does not guarantee happiness (a logical yet an unrealistic matter for many of us). Third on the list was Mr Patrick Daya, who was asked to share his idea of a Dream Home with the audience. Although many of us still dream about living in castles, this man made his stand by stating that a happy family is all he need in his dream home. Mr Dominic Joseph stood up as the next volunteer. As soon as the question was posed, he confidently started his speech about his overseas experience. He shared on how his overseas experiences really changed his mindset about life. Next, our champion in the Area C2 contest, Ms Fatoumata Dibba rose to the occasion and gave her opinion on furthering her studies. (i really got to reveal this..she is the only table topics speaker who used the word of the evening..but then again, maybe it's because she is the Grammarian..hehe.. Great job there, Fatoumata!!)

Table Topics Evaluator, it was none other than TM Muthu Kumar (self-proclaimed most handsome young indian man in the club! LSY:OMG..hahah!!). Delivery of his evaluation was done in a way that no one was visibly demotivated to embrace the challenge of table topics in the future. Yet, the areas for improvement were firmly stressed as well.. (spare the rod and spoil the child...hehe)

Humour Session:

Our jovial Humour Master, Ms Foo Li Hwa made everyone roar with laughter right from the beginning!! It takes great effort to make sure that no one gets offended when telling a joke. And our club “humour lady” succeeded! (I can still remember how she defended herself against criticism of dirty jokes on her..she declared that everything is in the brain-it depends on how you look at it!!) (LSY: Naughty..naughty..naughty...XD)

Area C2 International Speech Contest - Great, Inspiring, Awesome!

Now, think real hard.... Where was I on 14 March 2009? What was I doing from 2pm to 5pm? How could I have missed the Area C2 International Speech & Table Topics Contest?! It was just the perfect learning opportunity. Great SPEAKERS, Inspiring SPEECHES and Awesome FOOD, i tell you! XD

We are especially proud and honoured that Stamford College TMC hosted the Successful event. So... What happened? Who was there? How well did the event run? Erm..winners??

2.00pm- Event started with a light refreshment and fellowship session. Judges, role players and contestants were then ushered to different rooms to be briefed by their respective people-in-charge. President of Stamford College TMC aka Mr Joshua (the handsome man of Stamford) seemed to be totally in control of the situation. He was busy making sure that everything is in place and no last minute disruptions to interrupt the flow of the event. And...he succeeded!!!

2.30pm! The energetic Sergeant-At-Arms, Teresa Chin called the first session of contest to order. Then, we had the opening and welcome address by the Organising Chairperson, Mr Joshua. So fiery and energetic he was that he grabbed immediate attention and started the ball rolling.

2.40pm sharp. Time to kickstart the event!!! Ms Ivy Cherng as the Contest Chair explained the Contest & House Rules. Are the contestants READY?? Are the judges READY?? Is the audience READY??? (Weirdly, the judges were the most enthusiastic lot!!oops)

International Speech Contest......Here it comes!!!

Try guessing the first speaker...need a clue? The brightest of all (remember that the word bright has got 2 meanings- smart and shiny). Yes thats right...its none other than our Humour Tiger, Mr Stephen Fernando. As usual, he started off coolly with his topic "Our Life’s Mission". Using really uncommon speech style, he managed to captivate the audience and kept them hypnotized for 5 minutes and 23 seconds. He even shared one of his funny personal experience in which he offered to be a counsellor but ended up being advised to get a good counselling for his weird mannerism.(hahaha..serves him right!!)

Lucky number two was the young gentleman, Mr Ng Yau Hong. Quite confidently, he marched to the stage and without any hesitation, started his speech entitled "Life’s Journey". Although his topic resembled the previous speaker’s one, he did succeed in making his own mark. By adopting a serious speech technique, he made it different by injecting firm principles and ideas about life. A stark contrast from the previous speaker's style isn't it? That's what I call unique. And that's where we learn from all these confident speakers!

Next up was the tall, well-built man, Mr Robert Ram. Upon mention of his topic - "Quit Smoking".. huh? Smoking AGAIN?? Honestly, I was afraid the audience would get bored and uninterested (same old topic again and again.. is there no other better topics?) A HUGE MISTAKE! Hey..i meant I made a huge mistake! Right from the beginning, Mr Robert Ram performed in such a breathtaking fashion that all eyes were on him. It is evidently clear that he left a strong impact on the audience - fake it til’ you make it. And trust me..this man can even convince the devil to stop smoking!!! How did he do it? A smooth blend of vocal variety, body language, gestures, The Charming Smile...

Fourth on stage was the smart-looking young man, Mr Pooyan Fard. And guess what?? He had something that the audience wasn’t expecting at all –a story- about the Santa Monica bridge. Very few would disagree that stories are the easiest ways to capture an audience. Now combine that with Mr Pooyan Fard’s contemporary story-telling technique and his pleasant and clear voice. The result?? YOU GET BLOWN AWAY! (of course..his looks is a super super bonus for you ladies out there! hehe..) The audience? They really enjoyed themselves!!

Next, looking good in blue is our own club champion, Lim Sze Yue with his attention-grabbing title "A Shower of Shooting Stars". If looks can be trusted, it is extremely easy to underestimate this speaker’s skills. Lightning strikes for just a fraction of a second but the power is equivalent to a hundred nuclear bombs. And this speaker is just like that. I really wonder how he managed to insert so much of humour from the start to the end of his speech.(seriously, i think i cracked at least two of my rib bones due to excessive laughing...planning to claim the medical expenses from him though;). You won’t believe it..but he threw real money from the stage..(Unfortunately, I was just too far to grab a piece of the notes). Rest assured, it was of no offense nor meant for any discouraging intention. Just a pure act to enhance the flow of the speech. He emphasised his point pretty well too. At times of loss, you take a step back and you realise how blessed you are.

To seal it off, up came the last contestant, Mr Michael Pang with his title The Outlier. He began by explaining what is an outlier. According to him, outlier is a term used to describe something that is too different from the whole group. By sharing his personal experience (and other peoples’ as well), he managed to keep the audience entertained throughout his speech. "It does't mean if he or she's an outsider, you could ignore him/her. Look at the world of football, if one person falls, you lose a person to score goals." Simple and TRUE.

3.30pm, break time!!

Relieved, the international speech contestants headed for a quick "food time" along with everyone else. The burden is finally off the shoulder! Woo~hoo!!!

3.40pm, Table Topics Contest begins!

First on the hook was Mr Pooyan Fard. Topic of the day was "What is your Dream?" Without even the slightest hesitation, he started off by adopting Dr Martin Luther King’s "I have a dream" famous proclamation. He shared his thoughts on his dream to contribute as much to the society. A noble man with big heart!

Then, it was Ms Chua Siang Yin's turn for the 2-minute impromptu session. (Note that speakers were kept in a holding room beforehand. If you're still wondering how does this impromptu session works, do come along for our next meeting and get a taste of it first hand. You'll enjoy it!). Ms Chua took on the stage confidently and tells of her dream to be a better person.

Third was Ms Fatoumata Dibba (*claps* hey...our champion here we are talking about ;) who tackled the given topic with the eloquence that you never knew was coming. It was her first time in Area Contest level and she... She just impressed all of us! She declared she wants to become the "FEMALE OBAMA" ..(resembling the icon's successful run as an inspiring speaker). Her speech was the shortest- 1 minute 11 sec – but it packed so much punch that the we were really restless after her speech. Encore! Encore!!

Then came Ms Lim Lin. She not only presented her ideas to the audience but also motivated the audience to dream BIG. The dreams of Mr Conrad Hilton was shared with us and that he had made it happen. Very suave, very effective. Quite an achievement to do this in a maximum-pressure environment like the Table Topics Contest. And the biggest dream of all she says, is for her to see her daughter (who was present..) to be successful. Sweet love!

The fifth contestant, Mr Michael Pang listened intently to the topic before bringing the audience to "his world of dreams". He mentioned that his ultimate dream is to retire early and contribute to the community. Ah..what a dream..and he says if he could have the capability to travel around... Ah..what a wonderful life it would be!!

Last but not least, up came another handsome young man, Mr Suresh Yegambaran, who shared his love for money with all of us. He described how badly he wants to make his first million and continue with subsequent ones as fast as possible..(good luck!!!) Ultimately, of course Mr Suresh Yegambaran wants to contribute a chunk of his fortune to the unfortunate ones. Which makes me wonder..how big of a chunk would that be?? Hmm.. Well, he made his dreams clear and i cant help but give his speech a title.. CASH IS KING!! (I'm sure he'll agree with me on that!)

As a conclusion, everyone shared their deepest dreams without fear or favour..(though no one admitted they want to be the champion of the contest..hey, what were you guys thinking? haha..)

So.. you people out there.. What's YOUR dream??

3.58pm! Contest concludes.As the audience waited for the judges deliberation on the participants performance, certificates were presented to the role players and contestants as well. And here comes the climax of the whole event...

Not to forget to all the SPEAKERS, thank you so much for the learning opportunity. Indeed, we have learnt a lot from all of you. The event wouldn't have been a success without your participation. Table Topics Session:

Table Topics Master, YC Yap took the lead role and started the session with his unique style. The first volunteer was none other than Mr Joshua George with his given topic that goes something like 'What do you see in Barack Obama?' This seasoned speaker begin with the synonym of the name Barack Obama, that is CHANGE and he went on to inspire the audience. Next up was Mr Ng Wei Jiang, who spoke about Friendship and what it means to him. Third on the list was Mr James Gan. This man from Digi Toastmasters Club told the audience of his transformation from a kampung boy (aka introvert..hehe;) to a city boy (aka extrovert) and how socialising in the community benefited him. Muthu Kumar, our VPM rose to the occasion as the fourth volunteer, after much "persuasion" by Mr Stephen Fernando (as always..haha..). "Even when it is raining...." and Muthu Kumar went on to complete.. "...I will still come to Toastmasters meeting!" Wow..and he went on to explain the beauty of Toastmasters events. Very smart of you there, Muthu...XD

Table Topics Evaluator, again it was none other than ATMB Stephen Fernando! What else can I say about him? Handsome and shiny, ;P smart and funny, suave and sometimes crazy! Excellent delivery of his evaluation and as usual, no one was spared the laughter. Two thumbs up, Mr Stephen Fernando!!!

Humour Session:

The floor was open for everyone to share a joke or two. The jovial Dorcas Aung set the ball rolling with her joke about a tiger's head went missing. Where did it go?? Hmm... Then, the natural humour master (*hint* handsome and shiny!!) took the stage with his short joke... "Original or Spicy?" Hahaha!!!

What about the Food?
Fried beehoon with jellies! And if my lil' brain does not betray me, i think there was rendang as well...or was it the previous week? Oh well, food was as usual (quoting Mr Stephen Fernando) "Better than Hilton's"!! XD

If you were there at the meeting, you must be wondering why the TME seems to be giving a lot of information while introducing speakers. Is it the 5th or 6th speech?? You know what, i lost count of his advanced speech. He's like being in the F1 race. Zooom! Haha..

Word of the Evening: Huh?? (oops..) XD

Greetings, Ladies and Gentlemen!!

Stamford College Toastmasters Club recently held its 4th International Speech and Table Topics Contest on 24 February 2009. What happened? Who was there? How well did the event run? Erm..winners??

Contest started with a delightful dinner and fellowship session. Judges, role players and contestants were then briefed by the Chief Judge, President aka Mr Joshua, Organising Chair (Ms Grace Chong) and Contest Chair (Ms Gina).

7pm sharp! The beautiful Sergeant-At-Arms, Nisha called the first session of contest to order. Then, we had the opening address and welcome address by Mr President and Organising Chair respectively.

7.05pm! Time to kickstart the event!!! Ms Gina as the Contest Chair explained the Contest & House Rules. Are the contestants READY?? Is the audience READY???

Yeah!!!

Lucky number one was Mr Sam Fo Wei Hao. Looking smart in his white polo shirt, he marched to the stage and belted out a number to begin his speech entitled... DREAM. From the story of Kawasaki motorbike as his birthday present to the birthday bash his friends threw for him, he had the audience full attention. Then, the climax. Mr Sam danced with Amber Chia in another birthday party his politician uncle arranged specially for him!! Sounds difficult to believe? Trust me, I believed. You ought to hear his story. Then, the ending - It was after all, A DREAM. Sweat..

Next up was Mr Wang De Xin. KICKING THE SMOKING HABIT was his speech. A great effort in educating the audience on the harm of smoking and most importantly, the way to get rid of smoking habit. A full list of it and the challenge he made to the audience to quit smoking. The best part of his speech was.."If you still think you can't quit smoking, see me after this. I will personally guide you!"

Third on the stage was Mr Lim Sze Yue ;). SATISFACTION was the topic of the day. He led the audience through a number of his dissatisfaction in the beginning. Then, it was a sharp U-turn on why all of us should be satisfied with what we have now. The realisation that "Every individual in this room are much better off than thousands out there on the street..." was the message. Boy, was he satisfied with his speech. Trust me, I know. Hehe..

Looking good in red was Mr Muthu Kumar, our fourth contestant. SAVING HUMANKIND. I really wonder how he managed to insert so much of humour from the start to the end of his speech. The message of if everyone played a part, if everyone has the same goals, if everyone, you and me goes ahead and start saving the world, we actually can and we will. A slight hiccup in his speech was when the stand-fan didn't work BUT there you have, a professional speaker in the making, laughed steadily and told the audience to imagine the contrast of what One fan and Millions of fan (with the electricity on, hehe..) could do to him. A beautiful example. Great speech.

7.55pm, break time!!

Relieved, the international speech contestants headed for a quick dinner along with everyone else. The burden is finally off the shoulder! Yay!!

8.11pm, Table Topics Contest begins.

First on the hook was Mr Miebaka Christian Iringe Koko. Topic of the day as chosen by Chief Judge, Ms Ivy Cherng was "Teaching Science & Maths in English - Is it a good move?"

Then, it was Mr Lim Sze Yue's turn for the 2-minute impromptu session. (Note: all contestants were kept in a holding room and that there is no way for them to know what the topic was beforehand. Only when the contestants are on the stage, they were given the topic to speak about)

Third was Ms Fatoumata Dibba who tackled on convincingly on the given topic. She agreed that it is a good move and went on to explain her views on the issue.

Last but not least, Mr Muthu Kumar with his beaming smile came on and wow-ed the audience with his opinion.

As a conclusion, everyone said it was a good move to teach Science & Maths in English. What's your say, ladies & gentlemen?

8.29pm! Contest concludes.

As the audience waited for the judges deliberation on the participants performance, certificates were presented to the role players and contestants as well. The Organising Chair, Ms Grace Chong in a desperate (oops..haha) attempt to buy more time as the judges continued to be "missing", entertained the audience with her experience of another contest she attended.

8.39pm, Judges are back!!

Table Topics Session:

Ms. Priscila Low is back again!! Yes, with her jovial mood, she took on the role of the Table

Topics Master. This time around, things were a little different. First-time guests were thrown straight into the table topics "experience". Sam Wang Yi Hui, an IB undergraduate stood up to the challenge and shared what Angpau (red packets) meant to him. The tall and charming guy went on to tell that angpau were wonderful but it didn't beat the importance of having fire-crackers to play with back in Guangzhou! Hmm..why don't you share with me your red packets instead?? Hehe.. Next was another newbie to the crowd; Mr Wei Jiang who spoke about Mandarin Oranges. Then, it was Mr Joshua George "lecturing" all of us with his Choice of Gift to A Friend. Oops..did i just mention lecture?? Haha. Dorcas Aung was next, with her Most Unforgettable Chinese New Year Experience. It turns out that this year was her choice. Why? Clue: Times are Bad. Anyone get it? ;)

ATMB Stephen Fernando gave his Table Topics Evaluation with all the graciousness that one young man could have. The table topics participants were all encouraged and areas for improvement were given in a very delightful manner.

Humour Session:

TM Foo Li Hwa is back!! Great Ah Beng jokes u have there! I particularly remember the one that goes something like this. Ah Beng was mute and one day as he was walking, he bumped into Ah Seng. Ah Seng went on to ask, "Ah Beng, you should be working right now! What are you doing out here?" Knowing that Ah Seng couldn't understand sign languages, he took a leaf and repeatedly stepped on it. Ah Seng just couldn't get Ah Beng's meaning. Then, Ah Lian came by and Ah Seng asked if she understands what Ah Beng was trying to say. "Haiya, so simple..Ah Beng is on leave-lah!"

What about the Food??

Lo Sang ah!! Ladies and gentlemen, our VPE Grace Chong actually prepared yee sang for us! Not only that, she brought cookies and mandarin oranges too! A great CNY mood was well in the atmosphere. Of course, rice and two side dishes were also available. You see..SCTMC not only gives you a good speaking exposure, we also have super good food! Haha.. So, when are you coming over?? Take action now!! Anyway, ...

Gong Xi Fa Cai!!! In case you haven't noticed, 10th of February was the 16th day of CNY but the festive mood still filled the entire meeting. Table Topics Session:

TM Jackie Ang took control of the session with style with his Chinese New Year-themed topics.
The volunteers, i must say was quite "uniquely picked". What do i mean by that? Hmm..(Where were you on 13th January evening??) TM Foo Li Hwa went first to tackle the Table Topics Master's question no.3. Next, was TM Michael Chan explaining to the audience his plans for the coming Chinese New Year. Then, it was a first-timer, a Law student of Stamford College, Mr. Samuel Gordon who took upon the challenge of impromptu speaking. He gave a fabulous opinion on the dwindling of meaningful celebrations nowadays. CC Dorcas Aung was the fourth speaker, graciously appealing to the audience with her smooth flow of impromptu speech. Seems like they all had prepared for their respective topics..hmm.. Great job! Last but not least, CC Lim Sze Yue was thrown a topic asking for his opinion on the culture of giving hampers during the festive season. The first thing that went through his mind was, ooh..CORRUPTION!!

Table Topics Evaluator, again it was an honour for SCTMC to have ATMB Stephen Fernando who made his point that every speaker who took part were fabulous in their speech delivery. In addition, he managed to squeeze some time in his evaluation to tell of his experience dealing with guests during festive seasons. Yes, you can expect loads of laughter from his "rude" tale! Fabulous, Mr. Fernando!!!

Humour Session:

Who is it this time? Stephen Fernando? Foo Li Hwa? Me?? All wrong. The man who rised to the occasion to make us laugh was none other than TM Samuel Fo! Our own young man gave his humour in an excellent way that made the audience feel a tinge of doubt in MARRIAGE. Really had us laughing all the way to our dinner there...

What about the Food?

A warm dinner with chicken and vegetable served with rice. Side dish of local delicacies such as corn "kuih". (The kuih was so good that at the end of the meeting, when a few of us wanted to get more of it, we discovered..it was GONE. I could've swear there were a couple more slices left after the break ended..Now, who was it that sneaked out and took MY KUIH?!) ;)

LANDING HIS DREAM JOB

How Toastmasters training helped me ace my job interview
From the Toastmaster magazine, June 2007 By Timothy Matson

A year ago my father asked me to speak about my job as a U.S. Air Force pilot at his Rotary club. I accepted, and – because I wanted to do a good job for my dad – I joined Toastmasters.
That speech went very well, but little did I know that my first year with Toastmasters would also help me land my dream job. I’m retiring from a 20-year career with the Air Force this summer. For the first time in my adult life, I had to compete for a job in the civilian market. I researched a number of airlines and decided to apply for a pilot position with the Denver-based Frontier Airlines.

The airline called me for an interview on March 5. It was an all-day affair, consisting of three parts:

A traditional panel interview.
A scenario-based interview assessing the candidate’s leadership and decision-making skills.
A group interview where we had to give a five-to-seven minute speech.

My Toastmasters experience helped me in two ways during that challenge. First, we had a tremendous amount of time during the day to mingle. Even though we weren’t always formally interviewed, people from Frontier were with us. Because the airline prides itself on its customer service and “going the extra mile” for its customers, I knew they wanted outgoing people who could comfortably interact with customers. In November of 2006, the Toastmaster magazine published a great article by Katherine Meeks on the art of mingling. When I first read it, I thought, Wow, this is some good stuff! On my flight from Washington D.C. to Denver, I re-read the article and applied some of its suggestions. I really enjoyed mingling and getting to know my fellow job candidates and the interviewers, and I think that worked to my benefit.

The group interview is where my Toastmasters training really paid huge dividends! In the morning of the interview, we were given two questions to think about so that at the end of the day we could stand up in front of the all the interviewees and interviewers and answer them. The first was, “If you could have lunch with three people, living or dead, who would you choose and why?” The second was, “Why do you want to fly for Frontier?”

Before I joined Toastmasters, I would have dreaded this – public speaking with very little preparation in an already tense situation. However, this time I really looked forward to it! My Table Topics experience and newly earned Competent Communicator award prepared me. Combine that with the fact that I had taught history for three years at the Air Force Academy and had thoroughly researched Frontier Airlines. Answering their questions was easy!

When the group interview began, I enthusiastically volunteered to go first. In response to the first question, I picked George Washington, Margaret Thatcher and General Jimmy Doolittle. I made and held good eye contact throughout the room. I purposely injected dramatic pauses into my presentation. I used hand motions to emphasize my points. I was very conscious not to use filler words, thanks to all of the Ah counters at our meetings. I couldn’t help but smile because I was having a great time! This was really my favorite part of the day; it was a great opportunity for me to wrap up what I thought had been a strong interview.

Two days after I returned to my home in Washington D.C., I received an e-mail from Frontier informing me of my selection. Needless to say, my family and I were thrilled! When I joined Toastmasters I never thought it would help me land a dream job, but I am convinced that what I have learned in the meetings played a large role in the success of my interview. Thank you, Toastmasters!

Table Topics Session:

TM Muthu Kumar was the Table Topics Master of the evening. This young man gave us topics that were Christmas-themed and it was an enlightening session altogether. Soon-to-be Toastmaster George stood up first to share with us how good a cook he is, and that his mom would never believe it. Why? Because he has not cooked a meal for his mom! So, that's one thing he would like to do for his mom this Christmas. Sweet.

Next up was Jane, telling the audience how she would be celebrating Christmas in 5 years time. Then, it was Dorcas stealing the limelight again! An emotional tale with the message to always treasure the hope of celebrating Christmas with your family. TM Gina was next, tackling smartly on the question: How Much Will You Pay To Celebrate Christmas With Barack Obama? Her answer was hilarious. THE MAN would have to pay for all her expenses, she says! CC Marina then told the audience what she would wish for from Santa Claus-a big horse for her family back in Xinjiang, China and for all of them to live happily.

Table Topics Evaluator was none other than Stephen Fernando, ATMB who as usual gave the audience a great time of laughter, even in the midst of him giving serious advise to the speakers. And i seriously mean, he was SERIOUS. (and hilarious at the same time! How did he do that??)

Humour Session:

Our "first time" Humour Master, TM Foo Li Hwa did not let us down. As a matter of fact, she never did! Even when the audience was slow to respond to her jokes, she still managed to make everyone laugh! How is that possible? Erm..you'll have to come and find out for yourself. All in all, Great Job, TM Foo Li Hwa!

What about the Food?

Spaghetti as main course. Topped up with fries, sausages and the ever delicious little, savoury "kuihs" as dessert. A splendid combination. Wished I could have more of those...

Special Event:

As the title says, it's all special, special and more specials! We had a fantastic Christmas evening, all thanks to the elaborate decorations put up by the students of Secretarial Studies, spearheaded by Mrs.Ngu. To all of you who have put in so much effort to make our event a success, I hereby represent the whole of SCTMC's EXCO team to give our utmost thanks. Your little jingle beauties made sure everyone was delighted the moment they stepped in the room. Once again, THANK YOU!!!

Special Event No.2: TM Joshua George, our dear president gave his 10th speech this evening. That means he has already (finally..hehe..) achieved his COMPETENT COMMUNICATOR title!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! An absolute leader who leads by example, vowing to proceed to his Advanced Speech without any delay. CC Joshua George, we look forward to that wonderful day. You have all the support you need from all of us!

Special Event No. 3: With the joy spread all around us, it was heart-breaking to hear that Jane and CC Marina Lu Yan will be leaving for their homes back in Xinjiang, China in the coming week. They have completed their practical stint in Malaysia and will be heading home with the confidence and the maturity that they have gained throughout their journey with SCTMC. It is our honour to have the both of you, the passion, the spirit and the desire to keep improving in your public speaking skills. We have grown with you and we have learned a lot from both of you. THANK YOU and we wish you a safe journey. Remember to spread the love from Malaysia! ALL THE BEST!!

Special No.4: Wow..another extra special! CC Lim Wen Xin is back! All the way from Australia, she made her way back for her semester break to support CC Joshua George in his 10th speech. So sweet of her. Caught many of us by surprise with her presence, CC Grace gave her a surprise as well, to stand-in as the SAA. What better way to get a good look at this talented speaker who went "missing" for the last 5 months? And yes, she has not changed a bit. Ever bubbly and smiley with the confidence within her, tagged along with her mom, who was a regular guest with us. Great charisma from the two!

Special No.5: 5?? This may be too much! Well, I couldn't help but mention the great job by CC Dorcas Aung, our DEAREST TME from IREKA TMC, who steered us into the right mood for Christmas. Smiles, laughters and joy the whole evening!! Thank you Dorcas! You were EXCELLENT!

No Secret - This Is How Toastmasters Benefited Me

What is Toastmasters? Making toasters is definitely not the answer. It is actually a world-wide organization that gives its members the opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills within a supportive environment of like-minded people. Millions of members worldwide attend its meetings and highly benefit from it. Having said all this, how can Toastmasters actually help you?

First of all, it builds up your confidence. Toastmasters can help you lose the fear of public speaking and learn skills that will help you be more successful in your chosen endeavor. Confidence is actually a function of experience and success. And Toastmasters is the best platform to nourish your confidence. The members definitely do not expect professional speeches from you. As a matter of fact, they look forward to see improvement in you. They look forward to see you transforming from a zero to a hero. They love to see your stage-fright metamorphoses into rock-hard confidence. Undeniably, confidence is one of the most important tool to navigate through life.

In the context of business, a confident person is the one who is going to make the most money at the end of the day. You will be the one to persuade and convince others (even influence at times), almost effortlessly, to make favourable deals. As such, Toastmasters may be an additional oxygen for students pursuing Business Studies. Doesn't that sound appealing? Imagine closing business deals with potential clients, who may just be amazed at the confidence you portray, the way you speak, the way you sell your product, the way you actually made them say (without them even realising it!)..Yes, I'm definitely going to BUY this Wonderful Product! (even amidst the troubling economic crisis? Hey, Why not?) So, business students out there, you may want to consider what you're missing here, in order to make a quantum leap in your studies, impacting the business world (with a loud BANG!) and ultimately, your own destiny.

Besides that, Toastmasters gives you plenty of exercises in the fine art of speech-making. Constant delivery of speeches during meetings will actually enhance your speech skills. You will learn the different varieties of tones to use when persuading or influencing someone as opposed to when you are merely telling a story about your childhood. By attending Toastmasters meeting regularly, you will discover the truth in the old adage: Practise makes perfect. This is particularly useful to individuals who are doing their Law, Hospitality and Secretarial studies. You learn the faultless way to present your ideas in order to achieve a specific objective; be it arguments, persuasion or even mere informing.

Apart from that, Toastmasters is an important platform to do networking. Toastmasters consists of only people who aggressively seek progress in their life. Since birds of the same feather flock together, you meet and build important networks with people from various industries. Just to name a few: Construction, Manufacturing, Automobile, I.T, Education, Hospitality, Business, Law or even Professional Speech Training! This initial introduction will lead to a stronger bond of relationship among members. Later in life, this bond will help when the opportunity arises. Furthermore, students in the Human Resource studies can actually analyse different characters of people in the working world without even entering the workforce. Besides, no one would ever pass out on a strong list of contacts, would they?

To sum things up, Toastmasters is beneficial regardless of the field you are in. You can witness yourself achieving your dreams through Toastmasters. If you think this is only an attempt to brainwash you, take a quick peek at the Toastmasters International website. Look at the testimonials of thousands of people. Still, if they do not convince you, then just join in on any Toastmasters meeting. Your journey with Toastmasters will unmistakeably change this unusual perspective. It is easy having a thousand of excuses to procrastinate. But, in reality, you only need one good reason to do it- and now that reason lies before you:

You want to carve for yourself a better path, a better future, a better life, one step HIGHER than the rest.

Begin now and you will find that the rest is easy!

Table Topics Session:

Our Table Topics Master for the evening caught the audience attention with a surprising theme! (It was suppose to be a regular meeting, that is without any theme for the evening). Dorcas Aung, our regular guest splendidly threw out her table topics question with the theme "Do Whatever You Like, Just As Long As You Don't Mess Up". We later found out that there was a story behind this theme, a very funny story. XD

So..who was the first to step up? Our Immediate Past President (IPP), Ms. Priscila Low led the way, portraying the confidence of a truly seasoned speaker. Not wanting to miss out, Mr. Joshua George was up next. Then, a first-timer (and soon to be TM) Thaceswaran *Welcome Aboard!!* took the challenge on sharing with us how to be a good parent when he's just only a student! Amazing feat. TM Jackie Ang was the fourth volunteer. To Marry Or To Stay Single? Guess what was his choice? Hmm.. Jackie, a man who wants freedom and dread the naggings of a partner. Got it? Last but not least, Lucas Ng came up with his diplomatical view on the topic given. Man, we ought to learn from him! Our dear Table Topics Evaluator was none other than Terry Ng,CC. To sum up all his evaluation, one word, excellent!

Humour Session:

On the spot, our dear humour master refused to let us down! TM Foo Li Hwa with her ever entertaining jokes made the mood in the room even more livelier! Awesome work. Thank you so much!

What about the Food?

Nasi Lemak was the menu of the day. Side servings of spring-rolls and yummy doughnuts delighted all of us who were present.

Table Topics Session:

Not surprising, our Table Topics Master, Grace Chong chose topics that were related to Changes in Life. I guess the buzz word for the week is none other than Change. So, ladies and gentlemen, who were the brave souls that stood out for the challenge? First up, our dear President, Mr.Joshua George led the way. Next up was our TME! Well, I guess Muthu Kumar was full of enthusiasm to speak during the evening. He even mentioned he wanted to change his attitude of being shy! With that confidence portrayed, there's no way we're gonna believe u are still shy, my friend! Then, Lily, a guest from Xinjiang bravely tackled the topic given to her. Micheal who was a guest came up as the fourth impromptu speaker. The session was concluded with another excellent 2minute speech from Poh Li, a guest from UM TMC. So who was the best? Read on..it'll be spilled out in a moment.

It's been a while, but our dear humour master is back!! Foo Li Hwa..again with her entertaining jokes. Never failed to make us laugh to our heart's content!

Indeed, there was a hint of nervousness from our dear COMPETENT COMMUNICATOR but this is how we learn. No one is perfect. If you were with us that evening, and have the slightest doubt, let me tell you that your doubt was unfounded. CC Marina Lu is one of our best speakers, experienced and polished. We have learnt so much from this beautiful speaker and we believe there's so much more that we could learn from her. Also, we have an Icebreaker speech from TM Jackie Ang! The first step has been made. We look forward to more enlightening speeches from you and most importantly, to learn and grow with you, Jackie.

There were several special events for the evening. We had a marathon of assignment speeches rather than the usual Table Topics Session in the first half. Also, it was with great pride that an invocation speech was given by one of our earliest members, a student from China who amidst his hectic work schedule, took the time off to share with us, how Toastmasters had and is still improving his skills in communication & presentation skills.
